Over the past few weeks, work has begun on an exciting project to recover headstones from a dismantled Jewish cemetery in Slutsk, just south of Minsk, Belarus. The Together Plan has sent a team to Slutsk to rescue the headstones, which had been repurposed as building materials or simply abandoned and buried.

The project will preserve a hugely significant chapter in the history of Jewish Slutsk, where the headstones record the names of ancestors of large numbers of people both in Slutsk and worldwide. The current Jewish community of Slutsk – of whom The Together Plan is a longstanding partner – will be involved at every stage. Projects like this are transformative for communities, bringing community members of all ages together to collaborate on the project, engaging people with their Jewish identity, and catalysing a wide range of educational and fun activities within the community.
