It takes a team of passionate volunteers with a good dose of determination and drive to ensure that the Aid Together project runs smoothly. But it’s so much more than that. It’s fuelled by camaraderie and friendship and a real sense of community. Our team sees the fruits of their labours every time a lorry is loaded and dispatched. It is a huge effort to collect, sort, pack and load twelve tonnes of donations but the effort is so worth it and so greatly appreciated and valued by the individuals and communities who receive the aid in Belarus. At the end of October we loaded a lorry – our first consignment in a post-Brexit world, and it was a whole new challenge.
Youth is the future, and to build that future wisely, it is important to understand the past with all the lessons that history teaches us. Young people have been and continue to be at the heart of The Together Plan and many play an integral role in the work of the charity. What began as a one off trip to Belarus back in 2010 has grown and is developing in a way that none of us had expected. Youth for Youth at The Together Plan is in transition taking us on a journey which is now connecting people across the world.
Belarus to the Jewish world is of huge significance, but is little spoken of. It is a myriad of long forgotten treasure or, in some cases, undiscovered history. Buildings that once pulsated with vibrant Jewish life, today stand abandoned, unmarked and forgotten. It is now the mission of The Together Plan to tell this story, in a way that engages the community, brings local people together and connects people across the globe. Everywhere in Belarus you will find a story of significance that impacts the wider world. Volozhin is just one of those places.
We are delighted and excited with all the activity that has been taking place both here in the UK and in Belarus for this year’s Mitzvah Day. It is always so wonderful to see people getting out and active for and in support of community and social action. The buzz, the energy and the positivity is just wonderful.
Check out Michelle’s delicious recipes for November….this month it’s all about Chanukah, with a special guest contribution.
